Pictures from April 20, 2003
The view from the balcony looking north east. The eastern edge of the lake is in the centre, middle distance, with the Oakland hills in the background. The tallish cream building in the middle distance is an assisted living center for the aged. Across from there are the tennis courts.
The view from the balcony looking south west. The building in the foreground is a new secondary school. To the west of that is the Department of Education building, and beyond that, a church. The street in front of the school is East 11th St.
Another view of the east end of the lake, under rather ominous clouds to the north, with a faint rainbox in the middle distance. The setting sun created a glare off the windows in several buildings, which makes them rather featureless. There was a brief shower just after we got in from work, and we were fortunate to get the rainbow, which was fading rather quickly.
Picture taken from the walking trail at the San Leandro Marina, about 8 miles south west of home. San Mateo is barely visible in the background across the bay, and the arriving jet, bound for the Oakland Airport, is on final approach. The airport is about a mile or less due north. You can barely make out some power plyons, which run alongside the San Mateo Bridge, all 6 or so miles of it.
A shot of the south end of the Oakland airport from the San Leandro marina. There is a Southwest Airlines 737 preparing to depart.
A distant view of San Francisco from the San Leandro Marina walking trail. The eastern edge of the bay, and entrance to the marina, is to the right. In the middle distance is the Oakland airport. The structure in the water houses a warning light for low water.
Another shot from the San Leandro walking trail, this time from the northernmost point, looking north towards San Francisco. In the middle distance is a jet departing from the Oakland airport. In the right-hand side of the picture you can make out the masts of boats in the marina. In the middle distance you can make out the suspension part of the Bay Bridge.
Another jet, a United Airlines 737, on its way in to Oakland airport. Unfortunately, Tower Air's bankruptcy means there are no more 747s arriving at Oak on a regular basis. Now THAT final approach would make a great picture :-).
The salt water marshes in San Leandro, which lie between the bay trail, the San Leandro municipal golf course and the housing development in the western end of the town. A freight train, headed north, is in the middle distance. The line extends from San Diego in the south all the way north to Canada and is shared by the freight transporters and Amtrak.
