Pictures from our vacation in Reno, May 12-15, 2003
Shot of me looking out from the promenade along the Truckee River. The turbulence in the river is caused by water rushing around boulders and pieces of tree trunks in the river. The river is rather shallow, and is only about 100 feet at the widest.
Another Shot of me looking out from the promenade along the Truckee River. Pretty much the same picture as before :-).
A long download, but well worth it :-). Me with the backdrop of the waterfall on the Truckee River promenade. The animals are, from left to right, big horn sheep, elk and red tailed hawk.
Another water-based display along the Truckee River promenade.
A duck and her ducklings swimming against the Truckee River tide. It's neither a deep nor wide river, but it flows quite strongly. Reno is about 6,200 feet above sea level.
A cormorant preening itself on a boulder in the Truckee River. There weren't many cormorants around that we could see, but there certainly were quite a few large boulders in and along the river.
A shot of the Truckee from the Virginia St. bridge. The bridge in the distance leads to an island in the middle of the river, which has been converted into a park. The big building on the far right is an upscale apartment building. There is a cinema (the reddish-brown building) on the right.
A blue bird that I had some difficulty capturing. I was rather hoping for a better shot but it refused to cooperate and step into the light. This was taken in the park on the island in the Truckee.
Shot from the hotel looking north. The Sierra Nevada's in the background with the 395 freeway in the middle distance. We never made it to the Denny's restaurant, which sign shows in the right along the freeway.
Shot to the right of the previous picture, looking pretty much dead ahead out of the hotel's window. The Holiday Inn hotel, a few blocks down, is clearly visible. At night it was rather nicely lit.
Shot to the right of the previous picture. The Sahara hotel is in the middle distance against the Sierra Nevadas. Just beyond that is the Reno airport. The hotel was about 10 minutes away by freeway, and about half that as the crow flies.
The next to right-most shot from the hotel window, with the Hilton Hotel in the middle distance, the Sierra Nevadas in the background and the dome of the Silver Legacy hotel, which was across the street from Circus Circus, in foreground in the lower right. Some trails, made by 4x4 vehicles, are visible on the flanks of the mountains.
The right-most shot from the hotel window, with the dome of the Silver Legacy in the foreground, the ? hotel in the middle distance agains the backdrop of the Sierra Nevadas. These pictures were all taken at about 10:00 in the a.m.
Shot of Lake Tahoe, taken from a launching ramp on the south side of the lake, with the snow-capped Sierra Nevadas in the distance. It was surprising to see that much show on the ground, especially at times when it was a few feet away from the side of the road, but the air temperature was hovering around 70.
Another shot Lake Tahoe, taken from the same place, but this time looking north, with the snow-capped Sierra Nevadas in the distance.
Picture of me from across the road. I was hoping to get a full picture of the hill behind me for scale, but that didn't work out. the highway was 4 lanes wide, with very generous shoulders.
Picture of the surrounding countryside as we waited impatiently for the replacement tour bus.
Another picture of the surrounding countryside.
The view from the deck of the Bonanza Saloon in Virginia City, Nevada, looking south. This is a historical city from the days of the wild, wild west.
A shot of the facade of the Bonanza Saloon.
The Silver Dollar Hotel, one of the oldest hotels in Virginia City. Taken from the rest stop in Virginia City.
Shot of one of the original churches in Virginia City. It was completely destroyed by fire a few years after it was built, but was rebuilt a year later and has been going fine since then. Circa 1880.
Shot of the Sierra Nevadas on the way to our outing to the William May Arboretum in Reno.
